Fashion’s Rising Star Lucian Matis

Toronto based designer Lucian Matis is accustomed to being praised for his taste in fashion–it’s been happening since he was seven years old.  “I guess my confirmation as a fashion designer came from my elementary school teachers when they were always asking for my presence when they arrived at our studio for  custom garments in my Mother’s studio. They really appreciated my input and took my suggestions,” says Lucian of his early designing days in his mother’s tailor shop.

It’s no wonder then, that this Romanian-born designer has been climbing his way to the top of the style world at a rapid rate.  His pieces of sophisticated women’s wear have been seen on the runways of L’Oreal fashion week, Canada’s Next Top Model and Project Runway Canada–for which he placed second overall in the competition.  Lucian says his clothes tell a story on and off the catwalk, “When it comes to my shows, I try to create an atmosphere that has an aura, and then link the garments to express that vibe.  With my clients and designs, I try to encompass how a woman envisions herself in the best light and hopefully gives her a healthy range of innovative looks to live by.”

When it comes to his love of women’s fashion the designer says, “It is playful and at times daring.  I love the challenge in pushing myself to be creative and at the same time, really observing how women wish to be perceived.  I love the marriage of combining the two.”  The inspiration that Lucian draws upon for his designs might explain why they work so well on the feminine form, “Nature became one of my main sources of inspiration and still is today. Another source I had later on in life were old movies. Loved the drama, the outfits and the over- the-top acting.”

Although Lucian’s first passion is clothing he isn’t hesitating to branch out. “In Spring 2012 I am launching the Lucian Matis Eyewear collection. I am also working on a line of outdoors furniture and home décor.”  Clearly, this fashionable overachiever isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
